Sixteen years ago, Scott J. Frankel and Robert R. Cohen formed a legal partnership with the goal of providing the highest quality representation to individuals and businesses most in need. Both partners had been employed at one of Chicago's largest and most important legal powerhouses, Mayer, Brown and Platt, and left to pursue public interest ideals. Mr. Frankel joined the Cook County Public Defenders Office and Mr. Cohen joined the Mandel Legal Aid Clinic at the University of Chicago. The two formed a firm to combine the best aspects of private practice and public interest. Since establishing Frankel & Cohen, the firm has successfully litigated numerous important cases, including a civil rights case on behalf of an individual shot and paralyzed below the chest by an off-duty Sheriff's Deputy that was the largest civil rights settlement in 2007 according to the Chicago Lawyer 2007 Survey of Settlements. Other important cases that Frankel & Cohen has successfully fought include a health care lawsuit to force hospitals to provide free healthcare to the uninsured; and a lawsuit on behalf of laborers to obtain health insurance that had been unfairly denied. In addition, the firm has successfully defended several defendants in death penalty cases, including an individual who obtained a commutation of his death sentence from the Governor of Illinois.
